Getting Started with Claude Cowork

Getting Started
ClaudeAI toolsgetting startedpromptsworkflow

Claude Cowork is the desktop app version of Claude, Anthropic's AI assistant. If you've been meaning to try AI but haven't found the time, this is the shortest path from zero to useful.

You don't need to be tech-savvy. If you can type a question or describe what you need, you're ready to go.

Your First 5 Minutes

Here's all you need to get up and running:

  1. Download and open the Claude desktop app at claude.ai
  2. Sign in or create a free account
  3. Click Cowork to enter Cowork mode
  4. Type your first request and hit Enter

Try this right now:

"Write a short, friendly follow-up email to a buyer who toured a home yesterday. The home was a 3BR/2BA in Austin, priced at $425,000. Mention that we had two other showings today."

That's it. You'll have a polished email in seconds.

5 Things You Can Do Right Now

You don't have to master everything at once. Start with one of these and build from there.

1. Draft Client Emails

Stop staring at a blank screen. Describe the situation and let Claude write the first draft. Edit as needed or send as-is.

2. Write Listing Descriptions

Give Claude the property details and ask for a compelling MLS description. Get multiple versions and pick your favorite.

3. Summarize Market Research

Paste in a block of market data, a news article, or neighborhood stats. Ask Claude to turn it into a short, client-ready paragraph.

4. Prep for Appointments

Tell Claude about your upcoming listing appointment — the sellers, the neighborhood, the price range — and ask for talking points or likely objections to prepare for.

5. Create Social Media Captions

Feed Claude a property description or recent sale and ask for three Instagram captions, hashtags included.

Copy-and-Paste Prompt Starters

Not sure how to phrase your request? Copy one of these, fill in the brackets, and go.

Listing Description

"Write an engaging MLS listing description for a [3BR/2BA] home in [neighborhood]. Key features: [hardwood floors, updated kitchen, large backyard]. Target buyer: [young families]. Keep it under 150 words."

Buyer Follow-Up Email

"Write a warm follow-up email to [buyer name] after they toured [property address] on [date]. They liked the [kitchen and yard] but were concerned about [price]. Encourage a second showing."

Seller Appointment Prep

"I have a listing appointment tomorrow with sellers at [address]. The home is [describe briefly]. Help me prepare 5 strong talking points and 3 common objections I should be ready to handle."

Social Media Post

"Write 3 Instagram captions for a just-listed property at [address]. It's a [describe home briefly]. Include relevant hashtags for [city/market]. Keep the tone [friendly / professional / excited]."

Market Update for Clients

"Summarize this market data in 2-3 sentences a homeowner would easily understand: [paste your data or stats here]. Make it sound reassuring and professional."

Tips for Getting Great Results

Claude gets better the more detail you give it. A few habits that make a real difference:

Be specific about your audience. Instead of "Write an email to my client," try "Write an email to a first-time buyer in their 30s who is nervous about making an offer in a competitive market." The more context you give, the better the result.

Ask for options. You can always say: "Give me 3 versions: one formal, one casual, one short." Claude will give you choices so you can pick what fits your style.

Iterate, don't start over. If the first result isn't quite right, just say: "Make it shorter," "Change the tone to be more urgent," or "Add a line about the open house." No need to start fresh.

You're always in control. Claude is a first-draft machine, not a replacement for your expertise. Always review what it produces. Your voice, your judgment, your client relationships are yours.

What Else Can Claude Do?

As you get comfortable, here are more ways agents are putting it to use:

  • Summarize long documents (inspection reports, disclosures) into plain English
  • Draft scripts for cold calls or open house conversations
  • Build simple checklists for buyers or sellers
  • Write thank-you notes after closings
  • Brainstorm farm area marketing ideas
  • Research neighborhoods, schools, or local amenities quickly

Start with one email. One listing description. One prompt. The time you save on the small stuff adds up fast, and that's time back with your clients.
